Self-ageism

Self-ageism is the internalization of the stereotype of the age in question. Studies show that people absorb stereotypes of old age from childhood, and as they age, the stereotypes become self-fulfilling prophecies. As a result of self-ageism, older people adopt patterns of being unfortunate and needy, and internalize social expectations of how they should behave, dress and think. This section of ‘A Site for All Ages’ is devoted to resources that deal with self-ageism and its negative influences.
