Ageism and gender
For many years, gender and old age were discussed quite separately in theory and academic studies. The absence of dialogue between these two areas of knowledge reflects the disconnect between gender and old age in the popular images of Western culture. Femininity and masculinity are seen as “belonging” to the young; the old are “different” and gender-less. In this section of ‘A Site for All Ages,’ we want to posit gender as a central characteristic in the experience of growing old and the structuring of ageist perceptions.
